Knitwear Designs for Intrepid Tulips

Val Love of Dovetail Designs

I met knitwear designer Val Love a little more than a year ago at the TNNA Columbus yarn show.

We bumped into each other in a loud restaurant after a busy day in the exhibit hall. We exchanged a bit of small talk and business cards. The next morning, with our feet ready for a new day, and finally able to hear each other, I found her booth and was wowed by her easy to knit, easy to wear, elegant knitwear designs.

Apparently she liked Intrepid Tulips yarn too! Here’s one of her newest patterns, worked in Bamboo Frost. I like the generous cowl and the innovative sleeves. The bamboo in the yarn takes the dye a little differently than the merino wool, and gives the yarn soft highlights that also add interest. Val’s BIG Sweater to Knit pattern is available on Ravelry or from Craftsy.

Cayenne DaBell of Windybrook Handknits

Another sweet and easy pattern designed with Intrepid Tulips yarn in mind was created by my blogging accomplice Cayenne DaBell.

Cayenne and I met years ago in the Salt Lake Valley spinning guild.  She’s been a great source of ideas and renewed energy for all things fiber over the years.  Cayenne does a good deal of finishing and contract knitting, and has got to be the fastest knitter I know. She blogs about knitting at windybrook.

The shawlette is designed in variegated Sock yarn, and shown here in Britain. Worked mostly in garter stitch, the edge is set of by this nice cable “twist.” You can download the pattern from Ravelry.

Susanna IC of ArtQualia Designs

Susanna and I collaborated in 2009 on a little kit featuring her Swirling Gauntlets pattern and Intrepid Tulips Bamboo Frost.

Last year she was generous enough to use Silken Blend in her lovely Tethys Shawl knitwear design, published in Knitty.com’s Spring and Summer 2012 issue.

Silken Blend is a singles, meaning that it is a solo strand of yarn, not plied with a buddy. At a worsted weight, there’s a lot of uninterrupted yarn surface for dye to flatter.  The silk and merino that make up the yarn don’t hurt either!
